I don´t know what your night work is, but, what worked for me was: be sure to sleep well during the day (after your shift) on a not too full stomach. Eat big when you awake and a few hours before heading to work. Avoid booze (any quantity). Exercise and breathe as much as possible. Make an effort to stretch or breathe several times during the night shift. Don´t overdose on coffee. Only have a strong cup when you really need that boost at the witching hour of 3-5 am. Try keeping the mind occupied with games or thoughts, reading or other. The computer screen can really tire your eyes and mind. Good luck.

I do to - I am a nurse.
You need to listen to your body more. If you feel tired during the day, try to sleep as much as possible, close the curtains, take the phone off the hook, buy good quality ear plugs - part of the problem with day sleep is that once you have been woken up by a noise, it is difficult to get back to sleep and you may find yourself getting up having only had 3 hours sleep or so (if you are lucky!) so definately good, soft earplugs. It needs to be dark and quiet and cool - so get a fan it it is summer.
Tell everyone you when you are working - other peoples' attitudes/ignorance can be a real problem - even poeple you like! often they think that you will just have a short nap or something, they don't realise you have to SLEEP PROPERLY during the day!
Eat only when you are hungry. Try to have balanced light small meals whenever you need them - there are no set meal times now! and drink water when you get up +++ but not after 4.00 am or else you will be peeing all morning!

Firstly, DON'T take melatonin. It is banned throughout Europe for good reason.

Nothing makes night shift easier. But 40 winks half way through the shift can help. It helps if you have an understanding employer who doesn't expect the nightshift to perform 100% as well as the dayshift ( not many of those).

Learn how to wear ear plugs when you sleep during the day. It takes a LONG time to get used to this but persevere. It's worth the effort. If your quality of sleep is good, you can cope better.

I loved working the night shift! Here's how to surivive--well, how I did, anyway.
I used a white-noise machine--a portable fan on low works.
Get black-out curtains or shades (or use a sleep mask.)
I didn't tolerate bouncing from nights to days on my time off, so I just shifted my hrs a few if needed. i shopped at 24 hr markets, did my game-play & tv watching as much at night as socially possible.
Watch the caffiene intake times & amounts for obvious reasons.
Do get exercise--Don't exercise right before you go to bed.
Herbals teas, hot showers, yoga, meditation, all help. w/quality sleep. Good luck & enjoy!--i always felt like a kid getting away with something when I worked nights-(-for many years) ;)

Here's what I did when I worked night for 10 years.

1 set a bedtime and stick too it. I went to bed at noon everyday. the windows in my bedroom had foil over them to keep the room dark.

2 Don't switch back and forth between night shift and day shift especially on your days off.

3 Eat good balanced meals.

4. get as much sunshine as you can and still keep to you schedule.

Worked for me anyway might work for you

It's easy to get used to the schedule once you've worked a few nights--might need coffee to get started.

The problem is switching back and forth--ie working nights and living days. Some people recommend melotonin, people also say to not switch too often from days to nights and back again with your schedule.

Two words: blackout curtains.

just take enough sleep and, most important, go to bed at the same time of the day everyday. That's in case you work only nights.
If you work both nights and days, then I suggest to drop the job. It will ruin your health.

I worked nights while my children were young took a few weeks to get use to the routine, once settled i had no problems

it depends what job it is.if it is one that envolves you interacting with people you shouldnt have a problem,if not try puting that extra hour of sleep during the day.it helps in the long run. also eating a orange just when you feel like dosing of will knock you back on your feet.
