New Requirements for Travelers

October 3, 2006: This information does not reflect important changes to the WHTI expected from pending legislation. We will update this page once that legislation has been finalized.

The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.

In the proposed implementation plan, which is subject to a period of initial public comment, the Initiative will be rolled out in phases, providing as much advance notice as possible to the affected public to enable them to meet the terms of the new guidelines. The proposed timeline will be as follows:

January 8, 2007 - Requirement applied to all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
January 1, 2008 - Requirement extended to all land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all United States citizens entering the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere who do not currently possess valid passports. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and to a lesser degree, Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement.

Get your Canadian passport!!! I'm Canadian living in the U.S. was traveling this summer to visit my parents in Canada and the U.S. Customs Agent told me that next time I need my passport period!
Either way, if you're planning to fly you will need your passport. Believe me it will make your travel smoother with all the security at every airport. Also, even if you're leaving from a Canadian Airport you might be subject to go through the U.S. Customs at this airport before your board for Buffalo. Get the proper papers and you will enjoy your vacation in Orlando better! Have a great time!

You currently do not need a passport to travel from Canada to US, or the other way around. The US is trying to change this b/c they are afraid terrorists may come in this way, but it probably won't go thru b/c a lot people can't afford $90 for each person in the family to get a passport. But you probably will need your driver's license and/or birth certificate.

If you are a Canadian citizen you don't need a passport to travel to the US....yet. I think they extended the start of needing a passport to cross to 2008.

If you are not a citizen of Canada you need to show the passport of your home country and a paper that states your status in Canada i.e. landed immigrant card.

With already owning a passport, I wouldn't travel to the US without a passport, regardless if it's need yet or not.

If you have one, take it.
