No matter what kind of paint, stain, dye you use, I imagine the dark color would evenutally bleed through. My wife and I just finished replacing our grout with a darker color. It was really simple and only took a full day from start to finish (did a kitchen, dining area and hallway). I have a dremel tool, and bought a grout remover attachment. It worked perfectly and the process went very quickly. The grout bit removed the grout with hardly any effort or elbow grease. We then mixed the new grout and applied it.....Turned out really nice. The tool is so simple and looks so professional afterwards, why not go that route and enusre yourself of a quality job?

There are grout recolorants that can change the color. And they seal too. I've used them a couple of times, but never from dark to light. I'm sure they will change the color, but I'm not sure if the old dark color will bleed though. I bet the color that you end up with will be slightly different than the color represented on the samples. Contact a tile wholesaler and they can help.

Stain? I don't think so but you can re-paint the grout without having to re-grout.

Heck, my wife hates our light-colored grout (cleaning) and wishes we had dark. Stay with it I say!
