If the metal is real gold don't use anything on it but a soft dry cloth.
Do not use brushes on real gold, no matter how soft the bristles are they will scratch the gold and scratches will need to be buffed out by a professional.

As far as brasso goes, it works great on brass, because it is for brass, only.

The rest of the "polishes' like TarnX or other "instant cleaners", they work by removing a fine layer of the metal, not by cleaning and polishing it. The liquids actually eat the tarnish and if you aren't quick, it eats the silver too.

Go to a jeweler and purchase a jeweler's cloth. The polishing side is colored deep burgundy and the buffing side is light beige. They last for years and are good until worn to shreds.

Yet they are the safest way to polish and shine chrome, gold, and other metals. They work well on belt buckles, bolos, and guitar knobs alike.

Gold or golden? Gold stands anything, except theft. Brass parts can be polished with any commercial metal polish; golden parts will someday loose their coating, so better leave them alone.

spit, i know it sounds disgusting but it is apparantly the best, if you use a polish it will take all the finish off as it is only gold plated and not solid gold.

A very soft cloth and Pledge will do the job just fine, like a cotton undershirt.

You can use a dry paper towel if the gold is not scratched, otherwise use Jeweler's rouge.
