Actually, the trick is in the base color of your lipstick and how you apply it. Almost everyone looks great with a deep red lipstick with blue or violet undertones (good example - Revlon's Cherries in the Snow) which make your teeth look whiter. Yellowish, orange or brownish undertones make your teeth look yellow.
To wear, line lips lightly and carefully with a closely-matching lipliner pencil, fill in with that same pencil, then use a flat lipbrush to smooth your lipstick over that. Blot gently with some tissue paper and you'll have a pretty, matte look that lasts for hours without looking clownish.
And always, ALWAYS if you wear bright lips, scale back on the cheek and eye makeup.

If your making your lips dramatic make sure you tone down everything else. Like you can have red lips but tone down on the eyes by using suttle colors or you could go without any eyeshadow and put on mascara or a little eyeliner. Remember don't make more then one or two features dramatic. IF your eye's are dramatic wear a very light lipstick and blush and vice versa.

First off, whatever you do, DO NOT use lip liner!! It is one of fashion's biggest faux pas! Pick a shade that most compliments your skin tone, and then, use a pinkish gloss overtop.
There was an article in Elle magazine very recently about which shades for which skin type.
Anyone can wear red, as long as you don't overdo it and you need to find the color that works best for you.
Here's a suggestion, shop at Rite Aid. If you don't like the color, you can bring it back for your money back. Most places don't allow you to return makeup.
Hope this helps.

First, pick a shade of red that is flattering to your skin tone....not all reds are alike. Second, if you want your lips to be noticed (which they will be with very red lipstick), don't wear dramatic eyeshadow or you'll just look like a goth girl. And last, be aware that some shades of red will make your teeth look yellow.

Not looking too tan or medium toned, Paris Hilton can't pull it off because she has a tan. If you're hispanic or black you can pull it off. Also make sure your teeth are brushed perfectly, it tends to make your teeth stand out and look bad. Don't wear eyeshadow and if you do, try a natural tone, do as little eyemakeup as possible and maybe a tiny bit of pinkish blush to draw away from the lips.

you should only play up one feature--lips or eyes. so, if you're going to wear red lipstick, make sure it's the correct shade of red for your skin tone, and wear minimal eye makeup--- i think just mascara and some subtle black eyeliner with red lips is a classic look.

using the correct shade of red , they all have different undertones some are orange and some are blue you need to find out which one matches up with your skin tone .. maybe try to ease into it like just put it on real lightly first or buy a lip gloss w/ red tint to see how it looks

Use a nude lipliner to help anchor it. Apply the lipstick w/a brush, blot w/a tissue & reapply. Gloss might cause it to wander outside the lipline.

Go simple on the rest of your face-natural eyes with mascara and easy on the blush. Also, a blue-toned red goes with best with any complextion.
