There are several factors:

They have 6 new guys still trying to get used to a new system, which creates chaos on the ice and disrupts team chemistry, especially on D, which has had more turnover.

They have a few key players out with injuries and a few more who aren't 100% after recovering from off season surgeries.

They had a short off season and aren't in top shape yet. Their excellent team speed comes from better conditioning, which isn't there yet.

The are getting every teams best shot every night, as the champs, you are a target every night to every team who wants to prove they are as good as you.

Some of the Vets don't seem to be hustling as hard as they did last year or very concerned with the losses.

Add it all up, and you have a team struggling on the ice. I have faith they will turn it around. There are already signs, last night wasn't a total loss, there was some very good things happening.
The results will follow if they keep hustling and giving a crap.

The only thing harder than winning a championship in professional sports, is winning again the following year..

Now, it is early, but the bottom line, is teams gear up to play the Stanley Cup champions as opposed to the Hurricanes of last year.. Last year, the team could 'sneak' up on opponents.. this year they will not have that luxury... as the White Sox can easily attest in baseball.. Plus, for a team that does win it all, regardless of talent, they need a little good fortune as well.. and that same good fortune tends to minimize itself the following year.. Carolina will have a very difficult time repeating.. as did the Lightning and as will whomever wins it this season..

remember its still early in the season but they did lose allot of leadership in the dressing room and some key injuries are hurting them. this is Cam Ward real first season as he didn't play much last year in the regular season but he will find his game and will become one of the greats. but Ward needs a good veteran goalie behind him, Grahame is a nobody a career back up goalie and not really that good. Cam Ward needs a good 2 to 3 years under his belt. if they could get a veteran goalie to help Ward in his progress, that would be a plus for the Canes in the long run. see i never put them the Canes down all the time i can be nice.lol

GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!

They didn't have the team to win the cup last year and they definitely don't this year. Their winning the cup shows how fixed sports really are. Gary Bettman felt he needed to promote the sport in that part of the country so they won. Let's face it what was Carolina's average attendance before last years BS cup run?

Oh coincidentally Tampa did it the year before. This year bet on Atlanta or Nashville doing it. That's where Bettman's trying real hard to promote the sport.

Ward. He was only good during the playoffs last year. During the regular season he wasn't even their starter.

I figured before the season started that Carolina would be lucky to get the last playoff spot in the east.

It's called the Stanley Cup hangover. Give them time. It's still early.

They lost a bunch of their main key players. They are not focusing. They need to get their heads in the game.

They are overly confident, and expect everyone else to lay down and die, so they can take the cup again this year. They're not going to do it.
Staal is very good, but Commodore is over-rated.

It is early. Do not panic yet. Their division is still on the weak side. The Panthers are going to surprise a lot of teams this season.
