We all know that beauty is partly in the eye of the beholder and that the concept of beauty changes with the times. Recently, however, scientists have discovered that beautiful people always or almost always have certain features in common, such as nearly perfect symmetry, bright eyes, smooth skin, and other features that we're either born with or not born with. These traits are recognized across cultures and, perhaps, even by newborn babies as beautiful.

I can not stand a fence sitter like Katuska. Beauty is not partly in the eye of the beholder, only the variation there of is. That African tribe, is just that, one tribe who had a husky woman preference. Their reason was that thin women were indicative of woman with diarrhea, so they wanted the hefty woman. The concept of beauty that changes with the times is a shallow social science concept that is being refuted by the real scientist you speak of. The appreciation of beauty surely has held through most of human evolutionary history, despite being called " socially constructed ", by the ill informed. Beauty is only one,and not always the only one, of the mate value criteria. It does have higher value for males, though. Remember, though, all of existence is a trade- off between what we want and what we can have.

PS There is no need to dichotomize the cultural and the biological,I, as a biologist, find them seamless.

I'll answer this the best. Beauty is what you feel. Confidence is what you portray. I have met some ugly girls(physically) with the talent to portray a sex goddess. All you have to do is believe you are beautiful and if you are that sure of yourself, no one can touch that. Then they will start to believe too. Our society is f*d up. It consists of silicone and collagen. Who the hell determines beauty? Secondly, why do we care if they deem it so? Screw them. No matter what you can always find something you don't like within yourself. Also, you will always find someone with the traits that you wish you had. Just be happy with what you do have and be happy with yourself. And if you are absolutely nasty looking with no hope at all, then master the art of something else, like giving the perfect "lollypop sucking skills"

We as humans are biologically designed to find certain things attractive. Normally these factors are indicative of high levels of estrogen or testosterone, and therefore fertility. Examples would be large eyes in women and strong jaws in men.
But culture is involved too. Different cultures have different views of beauty, and the culture you grow up in influences what you find beautiful. In the western world, most men find slender women attractive, but in parts of poverty stricken Africa, overweight women are deemed more attractive.
