Tough. Highest cost of living in the USA, and a job market that was already cut-throat competitive and still has not completely recovered from the dot com market crash. We still see unemployed former dot-com executives working in Starbucks every day.
That being said, San Francisco is also, IMHO, the best place to live in the USA. Urban, intellectual, sophisticated, and unparalleled natural beauty within easy driving distance all around us. Restaurant heaven, and very rich in the arts and all kinds of cultural activities. An exciting, diverse, highly educated and very liberal population. If you can find a way to make a living here, San Francisco is as close to nirvana as you can get on Planet Earth.
This makes SF the first choice destination for top-of-the-class graduates from many universities, law schools, medical schools, and MBA programs, so there is a steady stream of highly skilled professionals fighting to find jobs here. Also, as I mentioned, thousand of people who relocated here for the dot com market are still here trying to find work after massive corporate layoffs in the tech market. This is why many recruiters call this the most competitive job market in the country, even worse than New York.
Strongly suggest that you not try to move here unless you have a job lined up first. Anyone in SF earning less than $68,000 per year is considered to be below the poverty line here because of the high cost of living, so its a very rough place to survive if you are unemployed.

The job market is fantastic for many fields. There are many technical and financial job openings, for instance.
The city is smaller than one might expect, so the night life is existent, but not strong. There are many tourist activities and family-type things to do on weekends.
There's a beach, and beautiful weather year round. You can't swim at the beach without a wetsuit, though. It rains in the winter, is sunny in the summer, and can have fog any time of year. It approaches freezing in the winter nights, but rarely gets there. For the first time in ages, there were flurries last year.
The people are pleasant, friendly, and laid back on average. I'm from the midwest, and found the average person to be similar, though the cultures are much more diverse and worldly. Much of the population is in the first or second generation living here, whether from elsewhere in the US or the world.
