Inspiration is a huge deal when it comes to creating art. I've found that it takes me such a long time to figure out what piece I want to do next. A great way to fill up your portfolio and sharpen your art skills is to take a class, even it's only a night a week. If you don't have time to do that, turn to your muses. People you love, music you like, anything.

A great way to help trigger artistic idea's and inspirations are mind maps. I used to struggle the same way that you did. I would just paint from a picture and try and make it perfect and I really really wanted to have a unique voice and not copy other artists and pictures. A great way to get over a transition from using skill and incorporating your own expression is to assign yourself projects with certain criteria. Then instead of doing a direct approach do something abstract and use the colors you like. Over time you will start noticing trends to the paintings that you come out with and from those you will find other things to paint. Also I suggest using a sketchbook. Whenever you think of something or anything that could be cool right it down or draw a quick sketch.

here are some websites for mindmaps and art projects:

Finding inspiration can be difficult, the easiest thing to do is let inspiration come to you.

Or, you take on the good ol' art student approach to it:

Grab a nice big sketchbook (like A3) and start writing things down, no need to think hard...just write down things like your hobbies, your interests, likes and dislikes, hopes for the future, themes you're interested in, movies or music you like...etc.

Once you've completed the list, just go through it again and pick out the concepts that appeal to you most, then start experimenting, do a couple of sketches to loosen up, play with paint and if you find yourself lodged onto a particular concept, then explore that a little further, hop onto the computer and do an image search on your concept, check out if there were any other artists who had a look at that same idea and look at some of their work to get more ideas.

Just keep at it and somewhere along the lines, inspiration is bound to hit you, you can decide to explore several concepts at one time, there are no restrictions ^^

If you're in a major city go to the museum, art gallery with a good pad of paper (artist quality) three pencils HB,2B,& 6B. A kneadable erasor, a rubber of good quality, and a good collapsable chair to sit on.Then copy the masters; they're work will inspire as well as teach you. If you are not in that fortunate situation then just get out and draw! Then draw some more! Everything! Old ladies, fat men, skinny kids, road kill, trees, cars, corner grocery store, headstones in an old cemetary! It does'nt matter what; just work your sweet raw talented fingers to the bones well enough to put calluses where people would'nt think of finding callusus on anyone's hands.{but an artists} INSPIRATION?---There was a well known woman who wanted to learn to play the piano, then she found that it would take ten years to learn to play...that put her off and she didn't bother. That was ten years ago and she still yearns to play. So; what are you going to be doing in ten years? A MUSE?--- Try GOD. If that's too much for you go to Renoir, Van Gogh, and the other impressionests. Hope this helps you.

I think all artists go through "seasons" of inspiration. I know I do. Sometimes, when I am in a "dry" spell, I will either just wait for it to pass, or I will start looking through books and magazines.
I also look for things that are intriguing. Like, I visited someone in jail once and I saw some incredible things being made and painted. I asked what they use and to my surprise I found out that they painted with instant coffee, which was fabulous, and for the colored items, the would dissolve skittles ind cups of water. I had to try!!!! I was like a mad woman!!!!!!!!! I started using coffee, tea, skittles and other colorful hard candy and food coloring. Teas can make all sorts of differ ant shades.
Any way, I hope you find your inspiration soon. It may come when you least expect it so grab on when it does!

i had the same problem and i just looked up the art that i like to do which in this case is manga, and i watched anime. I would get so inspired from the cartoons, that i wanted to draw my own. As for ur friend or watever, dont compare urself to anyone. A true artist admires his own work
