A couple of weeks ago, a lady walked past me and said, "age before beauty". I had no idea what that meant, so I just smiled. I asked my stepdad about it later, and he said she meant age goes before beauty. This had me even more confused, because I was thinking that she meant age leaves before beauty. All this was getting complicated and I forgot about it until now. I finally have the answer: beauty comes after age. Was I supposed to be ugly or not very pretty before?

Not a compliment to you exactly, basically it means that she's old and has age and wisdom, and that it should be prided above beauty, which you have. I guess it's kind of a compliment if you're an optimist or you're superficial, but I take it as a kind of cute yet very slightly bitchy joke.

Sweetie, she was making a joke...saying since she was 'aged' she should go before you 'beauty'. It's just a little saying that is meant to be friendly and make one smile...it can also be used jokingly in reverse.

She was saying she is older so you are more beautiful. But age has seniority so she goes before you.

Well the first answer was very good, but I use that statement jokingly to mean "I'm older than you are good looking", which is no insult at all. Maybe more a statement of equality.LoL!
She was most likely just being open and friendly.

I always think this means:
The older person goes before (ahead of) the beautiful (I guess young) one.
Age before beauty!
That is why she went ahead of you.
I say it to be cheeky to older people when I let them go ahead of me..only if I know them of course.
They usually respond with....you'd be lucky...lol

To me, it means elders before youth, respecting your elders as a young girl. My mom used to say that to me alot. She'd say 'Old and wicked before young and gullible" or "Old and treacherous beats out youth and naivete (sp) every time." LOL You were right to smile and let it go.
