A lot of show horses are kept stabled and blanketed in the winter time to avoid the winter coat. I personally never liked doing this. I would curry comb and clip before showing, but I pretty much tried to let the horse be horse whenever possible.

It use to drive me nuts to see horses in stables without pasture for weeks sometimes months, in a blanket under heat lamps. Yes people do that to avoid the winter coat.

I would train under the winter coat and didn't let it bother me. I would pasture the horse with out the blanket during the day and blanket him/her during the night. I never had a problem with it and received no negative comments from judges, because my horse was too hairy.

The only time I got real picky was during dressage and halter class, which I did these shows mainly in the summer. I would clip the nose and ear hairs and the feathers if needed.

Good Luck and Take Care

You can't MAKE it shed once the coat is in. Animals grow their coats in response to the length of the days. Day get shorter and that triggers all animals to put on their winter coats, dogs, cats , horses, bears. The only way to prevent the growth is to keep the horse under lights part of the night, so it doesn't know the days are getting shorter. Blanketing doesn't prevent a winter coat, but if you clip then you must blanket.

Put horse under lights durring the evening and night in the barn. Balnket the horse.
Use a shed blade to comb.
Increasing the length of daylight will make the coat shed out. The length of daylight is what makes a mare have estrus cycles and makes them shed the winter hair. As the days get longer they shed.

We keep the lights (200 watts) on in our show barn until about 10 PM. Since your horse's winter coat has already been triggered by the shorter daylight hours, it will take longer to make him start losing it again. Be sure to keep your horse parasite free and healthy. A healthy horse inside will be reflected by his hair coat. Don't forget the winter blankets and hood should you decide to do this. They feel the cold just like we do.

Heres my 2 cents... I use the sleazy sleepers( full body spandex covers) and then I double blanket my horse. This will work, but it just might take a little while to shed the hair. Once you get the horse to shed, be sure to keep him/her in a blanket, or the hair will come right back. Best Wishes!

Horses shed because the days are getting longer or shorter.

fastest way? Clip him. Any clippers will do notwithstanding the smaller they're the better regularly they are going to elect relax to calm down. Use a 10 blade, the better the form the closer the shave. once you've time clip him on quicker or later and do a mayonaise bathtub the subsequent day to convey the coloration back. you may want to also cheat and in hardship-free words clip from the shoulders up and soak him in tutor sheen for the images (or do the images in black and white, very stylish). basically ensure you bypass back later on and clip each and every thing else so his is evened up.

The only way to speed up shedding is to use the currycomb and shedding blade, otherwise keep the horse warm and indoors whenever possible.

WELL, IT GETS ITS WINTER COAT FOR A REASON... SO PERHAPS YOU SHOULD LEAVE IT ALONE.... BUT IF YOU REALLY WANT IT GONE... KEEP YOUR HORSE IN A WARM BARN... OR PUT A HORSE BLANKET ON IT. GRROM IT EVERY DAY ALSO. IN ABOUT A WEEK OR TWO, THE WINTER COAT WILL BE THINNED OUT.
