Sometimes A Great Notion by Ken Kesey
Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner
However, I don't think I had the maturity to appreciate these books until I was in my late 20's. They're long and meaty but well worth the effort!

To Kill A Mockingbird and The Cider House Rules. To Kill A Mockingbird is a classic and I love Atticus. The Cider House Rules is also great, and if you have seen the movie the book is 100 times better.

My fave is Memnoch the Devil by Anne Rice. It's in the middle of the series but I love the way she describes heaven and hell when Lestat goes to each place.
