I work at an insurance agent as an assistant. Basically I do service work and sales. The only thing is, I absolutely cannot stand the sales portion on my job. I'm just not good at selling things. Also, my boss is a real jerk - he's very hard to talk to, and hard to reason with. I've been working here for about 4 months and have yet to recieve in depth training for anything. I don't know anything about insurance, so how am I supposed to sell it? I've talked to my boss about it, but he thinks I'm doing fine. I've read books and manuals ... I just don't sell things well.

I know I should either suck it up or find a new job, but that's really hard for me. I go to school three days a week until 4 and I need to make at least what I'm making now to stay above water as far as finances go, while keeping my schedule.

I just don't know what to do. Does anyone have any advice?

Suck it up, for now, but just start looking around for another job. There's nothing wrong with you posting your resume on, say, Monster.com for example. You can do it anonymously, so you wouldn't have to worry about someone from your company seeing it. Try talking to professors that you like or seeing the career services dept. in your school, they may be able to help you, and since whatever companies would be contacting the school they know that their potential employees would be students. Until you get another job, definately talk to some of your co-workers and see if they can give you any help on the selling part of your job. Selling stuff can be hard, especially for those of us that don't like to do it, but maybe it'd be a little easier to get into a groove if you were selling products you liked.

Well firstly, im sure you know your happiness is the most important thing so if you are getting to a point where this job is affecting other aspects of your life then you absolutely know what to do.

secondly you said your boss is difficult and hasn’t noticed that you don’t like it or could perform better so obviously he is not motivating you in the way that you would like or even need. employers know that their employees need to be motivated, you must find a way to become motivated by your job because this will make selling effortless, and that is the essence of selling. I mean if you ever get to a point when your in a store and your feeling pressured by the sales person then that seller hasn’t done the job properly.

you are doing the right thing about reading books but books can only do so much use the internet and talk to other sellers.

thats all i can suggest. have a nice weekend.

I would just constantly keep my ears open for other jobs, but sadly, I think in your situation, you may just have to stick it out.

Insurance is a good thing to know about. I just started a job doing the bookkeeping at a transmissions shop and I have to handle insurance too, and I wish I had the slightest clue, I can guarantee your leaps and bounds ahead of me.

As far as your butthole boss, my job before this was for the most awful boss ever, I was her 9-5 slave, and thats if she didn't call me on my cell after work for stuff! I went over my minutes one month due to it, and finanlly had to say something and she got all wierd and made no offer to help with the bill, and never once slowed up calling, in fact she told me I needed to get more minutes! This is after she would sneakily dock my check 15 minutes worth about 1X a month, but the amount it was shorting me wasn't worth me losing the job over b/c thats what it would have come down to. You have to pick your battles with people like that if you want a pay-check. Something better will come along, minus the insurance, I love my new job!

as far as learning more, see if their are any co-workers there who could give you pointers, or possibly you could meet a few people online or something that could answer a question or 2! Good luck!

Apply at a temp agency. They should be able to find you a comperable job (you might make a little less money, depending on where you live and what job they find you) for the hours you can work.

Get a job as a waitress while you're in school. Very profitable job if you pick the right restaurant.

I think you should put out applications elsewhere and tough it out at your current job until you come across something that you think suits you best. Don't just walk out on your job, because then you'll be poor.
