fake pound notes going around has been on going for a period of time not only for five but 10, 20 & 50 as well. despite of denominations feel the quality of the paper and look at it carefully. some low quality fake notes will even have the paper split to half! look carefully at the printing quality. we have our own business and we are very careful as well when receiving cash and we check too, it's through daily when we deal & 'feel' the notes under our hands we will tell the difference instantly. but if we are doubtful we always have it check under the ultra light which of course i know we cannot be possibly carry this ever where we go but i know there are smaller version of this light as well and it's created conveniently like key chains which some of our drivers are also using on the safe side cause when they come back with the money if it's a fake one we will not receive it as well. i've taught one of our poor driver a trick when he couldn't believe he got a fake 5 from one of his delivery - i smack my thumb with sliver and rub it on the note and the ink smears in no time! i would say overall is we have to be careful cause it could be hard to tell cause the printing and paper qualities for these pounds are not standardised. and as for coins check at your change as well cause if any shop assistant discover their mistakes and try to cover it up they can short change you. we always experience this after certain period of holidays when people come back from their vacation they conveniently dispose international coins to us! so we are always careful when dealing with money not to be loosing out.

No, but I was once given an Irish £5 note and told I could spend it in all shops. I went back to the shop to spend it, and was told I couldn't. So I went into Woolworth's and told the same, so I popped into Marks & Sparks and was able to. I complained to Tescos for giving me a virtually impossible to spend £5, and they still have not got back to me, 1 year on. Do not shop at Tesco.

One of my customers gave me a fake tenner once.....and I didn't realise until it was too late!
It looked the same at a glance but the watermark picture was really dodgy, the queen looked more like Minnie Mouse!!
On comparison you could see the differences!

Mind you, nowadays I would hardly think it worth it to forge five pound notes. Would cost you more to forge it than the value of the note itself.
