I'm invited to an old friend's baby shower. It's a 5-hour drive, so I've decided I'm not going. At my job, I have access to TONS of children's books.
Is it wrong for me to give her some children's books as a gift-- and nothing else? Or should I send something that I actually bought, too?

Children's books are a great gift!

If it were my baby shower, I would love to get them, and it would make no difference to me at all if you got them for free.

If you can't show up for the occasion then I think the books are a fine present. If I went I would buy something small from baby gap. Just try to send books that will be age appropriate.

no, it doesn't matter weather it is free or not. for 1) the parent won't know unless you tell them. 2) the child won't care 3) there is a serious drop in the literacy rate with young people now a day 4) fantasy stories will help the child's imagination grow.

There is never anything wrong with giving books.
Books are wonderful. So if you're going to mail these books, then mail a gift certificate too.

If they look almost new, then go for it. I usually give a book for the mother too if it is their first child.
