I washed my cowhide in the washer and air dryed it. Cold water and very little soap on the gentle cycle.
Here's a link with instructions.

From Comfy Sheep.com (yes, REAL sheep skin):
"We recommend the following method to wash our sheepskin rugs.
Machine or hand wash in cold or warm water (water not to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit) using a mild detergent. We recommend Pure Castile, biodegradable camp soaps or Eucalan Wool wash: Do not use Woolite or laundry detergents such as Tide.
Line dry or dry flat and stretch to shape while damp. For best results, the sheepskin should be brushed with a wire brush when wet, when damp and then when dry. Do not tumble dry your sheepskin."
Hope this helps.

I used to wash mine by taking it out to the driveway, wet well w/the hose, put some Woolite in a bucket, add water to dilute, splash on rug. Now just walk around on the rug and work the lather in good w/your feet. Let dry. Obviously you need a warm dry day and a clean driveway - no oil.

If it is real sheepskin, then NO, if it is fake, then yes, but on the gentlest cycle
