We were told like when it was really hot, when my son was 4 mos, to give him maybe an ounce or two of water here or there, depending on if he's hot. It's all in their poop--if they have pebbly poop, they need hydration! They're just like us! Water up! You can start giving them some more water (maybe with a little juice in it) a few months after that, but don't give like a whole bottle of it because they get hydration from bottles as well, and formula/breast milk is more important that water alone (formula and breast milk are mostly water too!) because they need the nutrients that come with it. When my son was only 4 mos or a little after that, what I would do is just put a little extra water in with his bottle, so that he is still getting nutrition but a little extra hydration.

I think the general rule of thumb is to start offering water the same time as offering solids, about 6 mths. It also depends if you are breastfeeding or not, and the weather. Here's a link and an excerpt on guidelines for offering water:

When your 4-6 month old baby is learning to use a cup, giving him a few sips of water a couple of times a day (no more than 2 ounces per 24 hours) is fine and fun.
Once baby starts solids, you might want to give him a few sips of expressed milk or water with his solids - some babies need this to prevent constipation.

I started giving my daughters water when I was weaning them so would have been around four months. It was also summer then so they needed to drink plenty anyway. It must be cooled boiled water though until 6 months, longer if you want.
You can buy ready made baby juices from 4 months so this must be around the right age.

I was never told not to give water. I run a daycare and give it as early as 6 months. But I know that my grandmother gave me sips of water at 3 months and I am healthy as a horse. There is water in formula or breast milk. So a little water now and then is not going to hurt him.

I gave my 2 year old son water when he was 2 months old. There is nothing wrong with it to give your child water at a young age. I think that it is a good idea to give then water at a young age so that way they will get use to it and will drink it when they get older. You can give them water as soon as they are born its not going to hurt them.

Giving water to baby - 6 months+
The general consensus here seems to be that, although it is not essential, introducing a little water after 6 months of age is not harmful to your baby. Many parents like to give water after solid foods, particularly high protein foods like meat and eggs. If you are considering giving water to baby at this stage, remember to check first with his health care provider.

your baby can start drinking water.you can do it with the help of spoons may be 1-2 spoons after 4-5 hrs,but make sure the water is properly boiled(boiled at least for 20 min.) or processed(from some good purifiers etc.)

My pediatrician recommended waiting until 6 months, which I did and which makes sense to me -- I don't see any need for water when they are soley on breastmilk or formula. Once they start solids, it makes sense to give a little water with the meal.

Give him a bottle now with some water, she if he can drink it will without choking like. If he acts like he is having a hard time hold off for a month or two!! Good Luck!!

At his 6-month check-up, my son's pediatrician said he could start having water in a sippy cup - more to teach him to use a cup than for the water itself.
