If U know a sewing machine & how to operate it,yes you can do it yourself.

A. Zippers in jeans HAVE TO BE SEWN IN ON A SEWING MACHINE. These instructions are for a zipper replaced with a home or commercial sewing machine & begin as :

1-remove the zipper with seam ripper a few at a time. take stitches out of both sides of zipper, then remove at top waist area, followed by bottom to top of zipper.

2- Look where your zipper previously was, noticing the now impressioned seam/stitch marks. Iron both sides of zipper seams to have good & flat.Look at the color of thread that is used to sew in zipper, will need to buy a spool in next step.

3- Take the old zipper to a fabric shop, variety store that sells zippers/sewing notions,thread.etc. Get a zipper exact same size & color & get the thread color that was used originally when zipper was removed.

4- Back home, place the zipper in the seams you removed the broken zipper, earlier. Thread a needle w/thread & baste/sew-in by hand with needle & thread.

5.Make sure you sewing machine is threaded & bobbin loaded w/thread color as described in # 3.

6.Sew in slowly, making straight stitches & locking back in forth at the ends & tops of the new zipper with the machine needle
& cut off loose threads.

IF you do not have a home /commercial sewing machine your zipper will never stay in or be strong when sewn in denim or jean material.....In this case, take it to your dry cleaner, they replace zippers there in most all items.

You can sew it by hand if you want. Make sure you use heavy thread and a strong needle if the fabric is very heavy. Nowadays, there are some very light jeans fabrics and so it can be done. Get a thimble for your finger just in case and take care not to hurt yourself.
Place the zipper facing out against the inside leg...the part of the opening that you dont see and pin the zipper in place evenly. Then close the pants evenly, using your button and pin the flap closed. From the inside of the pants hold steadily the other side of the zipper and pin well to the other side of the pants. (zipper should be zipped closed by the way)
When its all pinned in place then stitch with close stitches on one side of the zipper...dont stitch all the way to the bottom...leave for later.
Check for placement. Then stitch the other side into place....you may want to open the zipper if its more comfortable. Check for placement. Then you can stitch the bottom of the zipper when you are comfortable with your zipper placement. Make any adjustments.
This really takes only about 30 mins to do by hand. I hope you understood my instructions...you go girl!

inserting a zipper is difficult. Inserting one in jeans is even more difficult due to the heaviness of the fabric. You'll need a jeans needle and a zipper foot.

Are you trying to replace a zipper in an existing pair of store-bought jeans? I would advise against it, take it to a tailor shop where they can do it for a few bucks.

(I'm not being snotty, really; I've been sewing over 40 years and I would never try to replace a jeans zipper. It's more work than it's worth!)

Remove the old zipper ; pin the new one in so that you can still maneuver the zipper up & down after you are through sewing .
Stitch lightly around the ends to hold it in place ; then go over it again , reinforcing your stitches until it is firmly in place . It's not as difficult as it sounds .

I just used my needle and thread without using sewing machine. Because I sell a pouches made by zippers alone.......so its easy for me to sew using two hands.........

your question is more difficult than the task itself. if i were you -- i would buy a new pair of jeans...cheaper and faster.
but if you still insist on sewing a zipper to your jeans..my only advice is you take them off i mean the trousers-- ...and then do the job...
otherwise..follow the instructions in the other answers...

Unless you are an experienced seamstress, this is a major undertaking. You can try carefully removing the existing one, and make careful note of how it came out, and go from there. The best bet is to take it to someone who has done it before
