Freedom can mean an absence of external restraints; in this case it signifies the opposite of slavery. It means "not subjugated" or "living under a rational, humanist, non-subjugating government". The achievement of this form of freedom depends upon the environment; if I am in jail or even limited by a lack of resources, I am not free to do all that I might wish to do. Even natural laws restrict this form of freedom; no one is free to fly (though we may or may not be free to attempt to do so).

Freedom has often been used a rallying cry for revolution or rebellion. For instance, the Bible records the story of Moses leading his people out of slavery, and into freedom. In his famous "I Have a Dream" speech Martin Luther King, Jr. quoted an old spiritual song sung by black American slaves: "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty we are free at last!"

Freedom means being able to ask this question on your computer. Freedom means being able to worship God without being put in jail or put to death. Freedom means having the responsibility to follow laws and respect others so that we all can live in a place that is safe. Freedom means sacrificing for the good of all....Thank you to all the leaders, soldiers and their families who make freedom possible!

Freedom means being able to make choices and having options. It does not mean that you can do what ever you want but that you also must respect the rights of others.

Responsibility!

Sure, you can be free, but what do you do with that? End up homeless on the streets, or find your own way?

Life without limits leads to a lot of anxiety and disruptive behaviors. We need to know our boudaries, and will do all sorts of insane things until someone puts us in our place. So limits are freeing, because we can stop looking for boundaries and get down to productive work!

On the other hand, we need to have space to pursue these positive things, like family, hard work, and recreation. So, we can't be bound to one job by government, or told where to live, who to marry, etc.

I really thought that this was well-written:

Don't plagerize, but maybe use it as a guide. I think the meaning of freedom is individual and personal. To someone who has served in the military, it means something different to someone who has not. To someone whose parents immigrated to America, it means something different to someone whose family has been here for generations.
You are going to have to give it some serious thought. Maybe compare yourself to someone that doesn't have your level of freedom. I believe that's where the true meaning lies -- in who your freedom allows you to be.

Not having to answer to anything but the dictates of ones own conscience. At least this is my understanding of freedom. I hope this is helpful to you.
