I live in England, and I have always wanted to visit California. I love all things sand, sea and surf, but I also like rural country side and lots of culture.

I'm nearly 19 and will probably go with close friends whom are just like me. We love night life and such, and like to chill throughout the day, but still have lots to see and do.

Which city would you recommend for my first time visiting California?

i think you should try and do a small tour of some of the cities, make sure you go to LA and go down by the water and the stalls and small shops. if you can go to Solvang for the day, they have really nice pastry's and little shops.
and then go to Palm Springs, the weather is amazing! i never saw the big attraction to San Francisco but i think you should go anyway, my english teacher is there just now i think. I'll ask her how it was... :D

Definitely San Francisco. If you can afford it, hire a car and take Route 1 down the Pacific coast to Los Angeles. About 450 miles. Visit Monteray Bay Aquarium and Santa Barbara on the way. Brilliant views and beaches. Good b&b accomodation on the way. Venice Beach just outside Los Angeles is great.

San Diego, if you'll have transport available. There's plenty to do in the city itself, the beaches are unbelievably stunning, there's some glorious parks and nature reserves and Mexico is only a few miles away if you want to do any drinking - at 19 you won't be able to drink in CA, or even enter many clubs or bars.

Just editing to mention the fact that although most people seem to love San Francisco, I personally didn't like it at all, although I seem to be in a minority of one!

San francisco. Then take the pacific coast highway for the sand and country. Great trip down highway 1.

San Diego! There is so much to do there. Lots of nightlife, lots of outdoor activity. You could visit Mexico, as well, since it's just a few minutes away, and the mountains are close by too.

My favorite city is San Francisco, San Diego is also nice, Los Angeles is....well huge and it will give you a good look at the melting pot that the US is. Hollywood is of course famous...

San Diego.

Right on the beach, then, in 30 minutes you can be in the countryside.

Plenty of nightlife and people your age around.
