It seems like a lot of lower income families are more likely to have a larger number of children, and not all of them are on welfare.

What do you feel are some of the reasons why lower income families have more children?

Sorry, but I didn't list my citation for this. In doing research for No Child Left Behind, there are a disproportionate amount of children from lower income families than from middle or upper class families (based on families eligible for subsidized meals).

I feel lower income families have more children because they don't have access to quality birth control. Many of the methods cost money, and are usually given to a woman through a gynecologist which by the way, aren't cheap. It's sad but true. I think if these people had the opportunities that most of us had, this would be something in there life they could have control over.

Income level should not be the only factor in deciding on having more children. I am a low income mother and I have another one on the way. I go to college and when my children are older I will return to the work force. I chose to have another child because I enjoy the 2 that I have and I would like to have another. I do not live off of welfare and my children are well taken care of. We do not live in poverty, but we do not have a lot of extra money.

I think there could be several reasons for this. One being they can't afford contraception. Another is they don't have money to do anything else so they have lots of unprotected sex. Maybe is a religious belief... Some churches think birth control is a sin, another religion thinks they are plucking angels waiting to be born from heaven, etc. Some think God decides how many children you should have and as long as you are getting pregnant it's His will. These families may not seek education about how to prevent conception...

Not sure I agree with your assesment seems to me wealthy people have large families too. maybe the middle class has less children or perhaps the middle class seem poorer because they have many children...Not sure why it matters so long as they are loved and provided for but many people love large families more power to them I myself came from a large family and proud of it. It was a great way to live.

I think that people who have more are more money conscious
and therefore choose to have less children. Possibly the
lower income families feel that their children will take care
of them later on in life.

In my hometown, it was very common for women to have more children to get more "mother's allowance or CCTB", or get more welfare. The additional or all of the children suffered because of this concept.

Sometimes it can be a result of ignorance, no birth control, or control over desire. But sometimes it is just that their children is all they have, at least they think this.

lower income usually means lower educated . . .so maybe it's cause they never learned where babies come from

although I work with a 43 yr old, well educated (BS in Computer Science) woman who doesn't know how she got pregnant ??

I believe it's a lack of sex education. And most likely the women are unsatisfied. Well most women are probably unsatisfied but when you lack the ability to fully express your needs and expect to have them fully met, your are most likely to settle with what you think is the best you can get.
