in april next year i am going walking in morocco. i am going for just over a week, and the main climax of the activity is to climb the 4167metre high Jebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in north africa, in boiling heat, while still only being 13. can anyone give me a list of some of the things that i will need to take. would really appreciate it. if all goes well i want to climb kilamanjaro with my dad by the time i am 15, and climb everest by the time i am 20. you see i have a bet on with my little sister that i will climb everest in my life, and that is one of my ambitions. so far i have got on my list:

boots
blister plaster
blister cream
socks, breathable.

lol, thats all i have got at the minute. i know i willl need a sleeping bag, and no we are not climbing the mountain ranges over night, we are going back to the town, Aremd, and sleeping on the roof under the stars. what else do i need (even the obvious) and how much will a very good one of those cost? thanks in advance

Good for you, Marrakesh and Topkal are awesome in spring (April) no boiling heat at all this time of the year, the weather will be just a wee bit warm and mellow. I do not know much about trekking mountains but I imagine you should take all the gear recommended for trekking. One thing the sun is very strong in that area so take a bushman's hat (or any hat with a good wide rim and offers a good shade, like a cowboy's or a special forces one. Also in mountain land UV will be quite high so take long sleeved shirts. Be well equipped with water (large canteen) and hydrate yourself well. And most importantly do not forget your camera, this is a very beautiful area and very photogenic. Also a good guide book is essential, buy the one by DK Multimedia called "Morocco" (available in WH Smith Borders Amazon.com etc.). This can double as a very interesting holiday as you will get to see the breathtaking Marrakesh as well.

Good luck once more and enjoy a swell of an experience.

Hey there
I did this climb back in 1999. It is very beautiful & difficult. You'll definitely need the blister plasters. The walking is strenuous. The hardest part is the final walk to the summit, lots of scree. I'd advise you to get a pair of Leki walking poles as they help to reduce the impact on the knees, also painkillers for the bad headaches. I suffered Acute Mountain Sickness & it's no fun vomitting every 10 steps of your ascent!! Get water purificatin tablets as the water tastes gross. I'd recommend you get a hold of any books written by Hamish Brown (a Scotsman of note who I have walked with & who has climbed the Scottish Munros & all of Morocco) he's an expert on the walking/climbing in Morocco.
Also take some lip-salve, bug creme & batteries for a head torch, you'll need it at night for bathroom trips. Enjoy!
