My friend has a bathroom that has poor circulation, and due to the dampness mold is growing on the ceiling. What would the best solution to his mold problem? Is there a particular mold resistant paint he can use? He lives in an apartment, so fixing the circulation problem in general may not be possible.

The cheapest and easiest thing it to put a fan in the bathroom; not an extraction fan/vent, since it is a rented apartment, just a plain old fan that he can stick in the corner or up on top of some shelves, if there are any. Point the fan at the ceiling and run it when the shower is being used and for about half an hour afterwards to dry the place out. Leave the door open as much as possible, too. The increased air circulation should help a lot.

Also, putting a layer of gloss paint on the ceiling will make it easier to wipe mold off and will slow the growth some (make sure to clean well with bleach before painting, though)

Get a small fan that oscillates and keep it going all the time. Also try using a bleaching formula to clean the problem area let it dry real well and re-paint the bathroom in a gloss paint. You may need to primer it over the area that has molded before painting it. Depends on how much damage has been done. Leave the door opened during your showering a bit with the fan going after re-painting should do the job.

thanks for the tips everyone. i'm the friend declan12 was asking the question on behalf of. re: the management needing to fix the problem, it's funny because i just signed a lease renewal and i noticed they added a more detailed clause about the tenant's responsibility to clean and control mold growth in the bathroom... must be an epidemic, even though the building is only a few years old. what they really need to do is get sufficient pressure in the ventilation system.

the problem actually developed when i complained to management about getting heavy cigarette odors literally every evening through the bathroom vent (someone in my building must smoke like a chimney). their solution was for me to cover the vent, which obviously seems silly given my current mold problem, but the smoke was very bad and my fiancee is allergic so i didn't have much choice. maybe i need to get other residents to sign a petition to improve the ventilation.

If he has a fan/vent in the bathroom then make sure that is used during showers and also for a short while afterwards. I have a similar problem but it's within my actual shower, If I don't scrub with bleach every 3 days, I grow mildrew, really revolting.

But using the fan/vent seems to have helped keep that at bay.

Ps...Declan is my most favorite male name ever!

Clean with diluted bleach, dry, then repaint with heavy coat of latex paint. A good wipedown with diluted bleachwater will keep the mold away regardless of the circulation issues.

It need a vent, but since it's an apartment, you may not be able to do that. I would, first off, complain loudly to the management. If they don't do anything (they probably won't), I suggest trying to buy or rent a house.

Keep it as dry as possible. Keep the window open while showering (or immediately after) and install a vent.

Try installing a fan vent to suck the steam out
