Some people claim gardening is therapeutic. Is this true? I've never had the opportunity to garden before, but my grandfather has a flower and vegetable garden, and he absolutely loves being outside gardening. As a matter of fact, that's where he spends the majority of his day. Do those of you that garden, feel the same way?

I love to garden because it is a whole year process. I get to look at the catalogs and decide what I am going to plant. You always are surprised at how beautiful the flowers and plants look. Vegetables are fun because they are always coming out with something new to try. I have 3 areas that are flower gardens, and one round garden is planted with tulips and flowers that bloom early. Even if you don't have space you can grow in containers or have a herb garden to cook with. It is very therapeutic, the bouquets are great to give as gifts. When the produce comes, you can make pickles and other items to use year round. Have a go at it and see what you think? Best of luck to you!

Ask any MD about how they recommend gardening to the elderly.
Not only do you get that nurturing effect of growing something but battling weeds, watering, planting bulbs and seeds, and pruning is a good work out.
I bought a mantis small rototiller that I use to aerate the soil and add compost to the soil.
It's good to use those falling leaves to cover your bulbs in the ground. Also I use all my scrap eggshells, fruits and vegetables to make my own compost.
Just pace yourself as it can be hard on the back and knees at times and read up on natural pest control using plants. You should know what grows best in direct sunlight, partially shaded and shaded areas so you can plan where and what to plant.
Everyone should grow their own fresh herbs even if you use a pot on your balcony or back porch. And color with annuals brightens up the area with their color and smells. You'll find butterflies, bees and birds ( I enjoy my hummingbirds) will start to visit once you have things growing.

I get more and more into gardening each year. wish I had more time to devote to it though. It seems to be a stress reliever for me. It makes me sad that my flower garden will get frozen soon.

Yes, when I'm not chasing the kids out of it, or begging my husband to dig out a stump.
