Nashville capacity 17,113, avg. attendence 14,200.
New Jersey capacity 19,040, avg. attendence 14,230. and theve been one of the best teams in the NHL for the last 15 years and still can't fill out the arena.
NY Islanders capacity 16,234, avg. attendence 12,500.
Phoenix capacity 18,000, avg. attendence 15,000.

thats an avg. of 3,000 to 4,000 empty seats a game its not selling if youd have a team in Hamilton with the Copps Coliseum capacity is 19,000 and it would be sold out every game.

Heres what i think, i Belive that any hockey game will sell out in canada, no denying that, however, you also have to take into consderation that a good chunk of the teams in the NHL come from a Metropolitan city ie. NYR,LA,PHX,MIN, etc. In Canada mertpolotian cities are few, especially in the west, if bettman was to place more teams (personally i would love it) in canada, there would not be enough metropolitan, save Ontario, areas to locate teams in, you would end up placing an NHL team in Lethbridge, which has a population under 300 000, i believe, id have to double check those numbers. Sports teams thrive the best in metropolitan areas. Its just not feesible, as much as i want it to be.
Adding to that, moving teams into canada, may damage the already, well established minor leagues in canada.
I agree with whoever made the greed statement, it also another factor. I think its also sad that Americans do not enjoy the game as much as we Canadians do, one day it wont be there, and that will be when they finally clue in that hockey is a far greater sport than baseball, or basketball and will feel guilt for not relishing in it sooner.

Can someone please explain to me why they have hockey in Atlanta and Nashville? Or in Carolina and Columbus? Does anyone even know what hockey is down there? To Carolina fans (if there's any), did you guys know you won the Cup last year? And why do some teams play each other eight times, while some other teams don't even play other once in three seasons?? I think Gary Bettman's doing an amazing job. He's done soooo many things to wreck the game of hockey. I mean, he's been commisioner since 1993. And during this time the league has had two lockouts, expanded to places in the US where no one cares, had two Canadian teams relocate to the US, had four teams declare bankruptcy and had some stupid new changes. I don't think anyone else but Bettman can do a better job of wrecking the entire game in 14 years. I think it's about time Gary Bettman resigns because there's nothing more he could do to wreck hockey even further.

Hamilton can only get a Team if Tornot and Buffalo sing off rights.
Where I'm sure Buffalo would for the Money. There is no way in hell Maple Leafs Sports Entertainment would allow this competition.
Where I would personally like to see it happen it never will.

Copps is an awesome spot too I saw Canada Vs Russia there.

Regarding the Devils:

1. They're moving to a new arena - that is in a worse area than it is now.

2. If you're trying to impress a client - you're not going to take him to a Devils game. You're going to try for the Knicks, the Rangers, the Giants, the Jets - nearly anything but the Devils. It isn't that the Devils are bad, its just that they never found a homebase in New Jersey compared to the "original 6" Rangers.

But even still - the Devils are going to get a lot more business people with big bucks buying tickets and making them profitable than in Hamilton.

HABITANT you are not being fair with your stats. True, they don't sell out the games here in the States like they do in Canada but here in the states hockey is not the ONLY sport. There are only so many people and they can only afford to go to so many events so they have to pick and choose. Three major sports in America have seasons that overlap--basketball, baseball and hockey and then throw in college football which is BIG in the states.Canadian hockey doesn't have the competition for fans that American hockey does. So when you take that in to consideration they do quite well.

Why do you care? Besides, Canada doesn't have as many people as the U.S. For instance, I've heard that all that Canadian people think about is hockey, and fornicating. But I've also heard that 2006 is the first year that the there are more U.S. born hockey players registered than Canadian born. I only heard that from another hockey friend, but his info is usually pretty reliable. If this is true than just give it a few more years, and maybe the sport will become more popular down here. Don't get me wrong though, I like Canadian people. I just think that American hockey lovers (like myself) should have the right to like hockey, watch hockey, and play hockey to.

In all do respect though, the right to be known as the country that created hockey and symbolize hockey goes to Canada.

I think it is more of a point as opposed to a question.

I don't disagree on the north side of border that hockey is cherished as it should be. It is unlikely that owners of the above US teams will up and go without major incentive.

It is too bad that the owners of the Jets and Nordiques ( Hartford too ) put greed before anything else. It will be a tough sell trying to relocate back to those cities and others in Canada.

Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree with this question (or observation)... it is just that greed rules.

Attendance is not as high in the States.Gary Bettman has ruined the National Hockey League. He doesn't have a clue about hockey. What the owners were thinking when they hired him as their commissioner.Americans are not as in tuned with hockey as canadians are.

Yeah, I agree Bettman is a moron in charge of the NHL! What I don't get is why there are more American hockey teams than Canadians. Everyone knows for fact hat in Canada, games sell out in like 5 mins and yet there are more American teams. I know those team have richer owners but wouldn't you make more money in Canada??

Extremely interesting stats.
I think a finger can be pointed to the local media-outlets. / People cannot support, or care about, what they don't know about.

I truly think the general media in the US is ignorant... If people knew how exciting the sport is... and if the media would enlighten people as to what is REALLY going on... behind the scenes, etc... - the general public would be standing in line for days to purchase tickets.
