You'll need proof of your address. If you're living somewhere where you receive gas or electric bills in your name, or have a rental contract for the property in your name you should take them (and your passport) with you to the bank. If you're not renting a house or paying bills directly, ask in banks whether they will accept a bill addressed to the person you live with (with a covering letter from them to say that you live there). They may have to go to the bank with you.

Most high street banks will ask for payslips and passport and unless you are earning above 20,000 a year may not even give you a bank account depending on bank. Best bet may be to open one at the local Post Office.

It was pretty easy with HSBC. You will need documentation (passport, visa, 2 or 3 months worth of bank statements from your home country, evidence of your new address, etc.) I did not have to pay anything to open my account.

We are all strangers to the banks. We are just a number. They don't know us (unless we are a millionaire, then they are up your a**) and we dont't know them (unless it's a friend who works there). Are you trying to bribe the bank manager? 100 grand please!
