I think the people here saying "no" are big liars, or else don't realize they're slowing down. It happens almost involuntarily - not necessarily to see carnage, but also curiosity about what happened (especially when you've just wasted time sitting in traffic and want to know why) and a sort of basic sense of schadenfreude at the smashed up cars, flashing police lights, etc.

It's not just on the roads either - pedestrians will stop and gawk just as much as motorists.

When traffic reports have a term for it - be it gaper block or rubbernecking - then you know it's a verifiable phenomenon. (Notice they never blame traffic jams on evil elves.)

Personally, I've found that if I just put up one hand to block my peripheral vision I'm better able to maintain my speed, look ahead and not gawk.

I've stopped to help a few times, but otherwise definitely NO! Are you looking for cheap thrills? Or someone who's worse off than you? People like you create more danger by gawking and also make those horrible long traffic jams. Move on!

Nope. That only leads to other accidents, slows down traffic and shows a lack of compassion. Now if you were a healthcare professional redering assistance, a policeman, fireman or ambulance, a news reporter, etc., that would be ok.

And please don't tell me it's human nature. My nature is to avoid looking at it at all costs.
