I've already tried getting rid of old messenger through the control panel but it's not in the list - the new one is but the old one isn't

Exit the old messenger

Go to C:\Program Files

Find the folder called something like "Messenger" or "Windows Messenger"

Right click it, click rename and then add a underscore to the end of the folder name... so "Messenger" would become "Messenger_"

That will stop it from starting. Just make sure you don't put an underscore after the wrong one, but if you do you can just rename it back to what it was before by taking the underscore out.

If you're not sure which one it is, go into each Messenger folder and double click the messenger icon. If it's the one you want to get rid of, then that's the folder you want to rename.

Assuming it's the windows component version of MSN messenger that you are talking about what you have to do is tell windows not to hide the windows messenger uninstall line from add/remove programs.
Do an 'all files' search for a file called 'sysoc.inf'. when you have found it, open it with notepad.
Look down the file until you see a line that looks like this:

msmsgs=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
Remove the word 'hide' , and you should be left with:
msmsgs=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
Save the file and exit.
When you go into add/remove programs and click on add/remove windows components you will now see a line allowing you to uninstall windows messenger.
NOTE:
In doing the above you will be altering an important system file. you would be well advised to back up the original sysoc.inf file to a location where you will easily be able to find it just in case something goes wrong. ;-)

Hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure that its not an old version of MSN that keeps running.
To me it sounds like Windows Messenger. A quick search for that in the add/remove panel or search (F3) should allow you to remove it

A good way of doing this( and this works with all programmes), is going to control panel, then add or remove prorgammes, wait till the list comes up and find MSN messenger and press remove, follow the instructions for uninstallation and its gone completey from your computer.

Try going to msn online help - they are very good at sorting out odd problems. I would have said go to control and add/remove programmes but you say that you can't becuase it's not listed. I'm sure msn or even microsoft.com could help you

On your computer, go to start, the go to my computer, then go into add/delete programs. From there, scroll down to the old MSN program, and click delete. It will ask you if you are sure, or tell you the another user is using it. Just click accordingly so the computer will uninstall it and discard the file. The go to your recycle bin on you desktop, and right click on it then scroll to delete. Youre done!
