It certainly isn't apple. There is a pending class action lawsuit because their macbooks just randomly shutdown for no reason. You can get the details at appleinsider.com or macrumors.com. I think Dell and HP are about the same as far as quality, however the new HP's have a much better finish and look much better. Between the two I would go with HP. The Sony's are a little more expensive, however the included software package is superior (click 2 dvd, etc.). Compusa is running a good deal on a Sony Vaio VGN-FE770G right now for $1099 instead of the regular $1349 pricetag. The great thing about it is it comes with a Core 2 Duo processor running 1.83Ghz (best mobile proc out now), 1Gb RAM, 120GB Hard Disk, and a integrated webcam.
Certainly you can get HP's and Dells cheaper, but no software.

Like several people have already said, Toshiba and HP seem to make pretty good laptops. Dells are ok, but sometimes they're hit or miss with them. But they do offer plenty of information as far as troubleshooting them and repairing them. The college I work at uses Dells and there might be one or two laptops that are problem childs, but the rest seem to perform well.
Thinkpads are also pretty good, though they're pretty pricey since they're aimed at the buisness professional.
I'd stay away from Vaios. You just don't get enough bang for your buck in my opinion, and I personally hated having to work on mine, and all I had to do was replace the latch that kept it shut. Took me hours cause I was afraid of breaking and scratching the cover.
And as someone said earlier, warranties are key when using a laptop. Too much stuff that can fail that you can't fix with off the shelf parts.

Depends on what you are looking for. I buy 100 laptops a year for my company... best ones for reliability seem to be the Toshiba and HP laptops. The Dell laptops seem to fall apart and have all kinds of problems. My biggest suggestion - make sure you buy and extended warranty on your laptop. If you carry it around much and you plan on having it for more than a couple of years, you'll likely need service done to it. Without an extended service contract, you'll be relunctant to spend the money to get it fixed. HP just came out with a great laptop with the High Def DVD player in it - wide screen - very cool. But they are BIG and heavy.

Truethfully Toshiba and Dell are my two favorite out. Both of them have about every feature avaiable on most of the bottom line units even (such as sd card slots, firewire/dv line etc...) both have amazing widescreens and quality built. I own one of each to tell you the truth, i liked them both that much! Get the dell Insporon series for multimedia power i have a 9400 and picked it up under $1000! 120 GB harddrive, 1.66 GHz dual core processor, 1G of RAM! this baby moves, for anything besides multimedia get a Toshiba. You cant go wrong with either one of those names bud! ;-)

I would go with Dell...you will get the most bang for your buck there...plus, they are actually very good laptops. Go with the XPS if you can, if not, Inspiron.

I say Acer is. They have great systems for low cost, and they last. I have had one of their systems since 2000 and no repairs were ever made. I also like their tech support since they promptly respond to anything you ask them.
