You have it exactly right... they are clots. The lining of your uterus is primarily blood and it sometimes congeals a bit. When you have your period, the lining is expelled and sometimes you get those clots. It's gross and can be a bit disconcerting, but it's completely normal.

Throughout the month, your body prepares itself for pregnancy by storing a blood rich lining on the inside walls of your uterus. When you do not get pregnant that month, the body sheds the lining. This is what your period is. Sometimes you can have bigger clots than others. It is totally normal. The clots tend to cause cramps. This is because the cervix needs to open to let the clots through. If you can take aspirin, try taking one a day during your period. It acts as a blood thinner and can help alleviate the pain of the cramps at the same time.

It comes from the lining of the uterus. This organ Builds up a good blood supply every month so a baby can grow. When it is not needed you have your period. Sometimes clots will form and that is what you are getting.

Regular changing of pads is necessary. If you have very heavy periods, see your doctor.

When you have your period, the lining of your uterus is shed. This comes out as a clot. It's perfectly normal. The worst thing about it is the cramps that come before the clot. God, those hurt.

When you ovulate about a week or two before your period, your body starts building up a lining in your uterus (endometrium)...most of the clots coming out result from that lining coming off your uterus. Ths is normal.
