I run Windows XP Pro, AVG free edition, Spybot, and Windows Defender....none of these removed it. I see virus burst in my tray and it pops up and gives me that "Critical system error" message.

That's easy. I had this problem on my pc before and it is very easy to remove. There is a free 30 day trial program called Prevx1. You can find it online at http://prevx.com Find the download page and download and install the program on your pc. Let it do the startup scan. It takes between 30min and an hr to complete so you may want to do something else while it's going. After prevx1 scans your computer it'll give you the results. What is does is put the file in a special quarantine that is invisable to even the admin user account on your computer. So it's like the files and regestry enteries never existed. close all prevx windows after the scan completes and open prevx preferences from the systray Icon. (next to the clock) After you do that there should be something along the lines of quarantine. Click that and you will see what files are in there that can be removed. I used this program myself. I reccomend using it for the full 30 days that are free and remove the program afterwords. Should a new infection come in the program can be reinstalled for another 30 day trial...

Ewido gives 30 day free trial. It got a virus off my comp that AVG(that is what I used to use) could not. After the 30 days is up, just keep it. But you will no longer have resident shield or automatic updates. But spybot can compensate for that. Just scan with ewido regularly and you can get rid of AVG. They are produced by the same company. Ewido will def get the job done.

I use xoft, but had to purchase. But on my first scan, it found over 900 minor viruses that ewido could not detect. It is supposedly the best on the market right now.

what is the name of the virus? I had a virtumond virus for a while and I ended up looking it up on google which lead me to a microsoft page about the virus---I followed microsoft's removal instructions and it worked. Try searching microsoft's page for the name/type of the virus and you will find removal instructions. Sometimes you have to read the removal instructions carefully because they are very detailed. Sometimes you have to restart you computer in safe mode to access and remove the virus correctly. Also try Windows Live OneCare: http://safety.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm?s_cid=mscom_hp
