It's an Australian film, can't remember the title, though what I can remember is...

Anyone who survived was at the moment of death when the 'event' happened to make everyone else disappear. The main character was a scientist who attempted suicide, and another character was an Aboriginal [Maori?] who was being murdered by two men.

The climax is where the scientist attempts to reverse this process and awakes in an even stranger place.

It sounds as if you mean The Omega Man, with Charlton Heston.

Fab film - haven't seen it for years.

The Omega Man, starring Vincent Price, is the original, though I bet the one you saw was the far superior remake starring Charlton Hesston.
