It's an Australian film, can't remember the title, though what I can remember is...
Anyone who survived was at the moment of death when the 'event' happened to make everyone else disappear. The main character was a scientist who attempted suicide, and another character was an Aboriginal [Maori?] who was being murdered by two men.
The climax is where the scientist attempts to reverse this process and awakes in an even stranger place.

i believe it is called the last man on earth , not sure of the person who played in it , i have seen a couple that could possibly be it .

there is one with vincent price called " The Last Man On Earth" maybe that is the one 1964 was the year.

i think it was 28 days later, but there was also a book similar to this (only with mutant plants from space) written by john wyndam, i think. maybe theres a film of this.
