Three friends pool money for a DVD - it cost 15 dollars. They go to another friends shop and ask him for a discount - he is not there so they are charged 15 dollars for the DVD. After they leave their friend comes back and tells his assistant to return 5 dollars to the three friends, the assistant pockets 2 dollars, returning just 3 dollars to the three friends. So each friend gets back 1 dollar and ends up just spending 4 dollars for the DVD. 4x3=12 So that means the DVD actually cost them 12 dollars. Add this to the amount pocketed by the assistant and it is 12 + 2 = 14 and not 15 dollars so tell me where did the other 1 dollar go?

Do you have any idea how many times the missing dollar riddle has been posted on here in one form or another? The answer is there is no missing dollar. They are charged 15 dollars, they get 3 back and the clerk pockets 2. 3+2=5 plus the $10 the store keeps = 15

The puzzle is in the way the question is asked.

It claimes the solution to be 12 + 2 = 14. It is true but has no bearing on the word problem. The proper number sentence should be 12 - 2 = 10 (which the DVD seller received). You could also say 10+ 3 + 2 = 15.

The clerk only kept 2 dollars leaving 13 dollars not 12.
15-2=13. The friends kept 3 dollars and they paid 10 for the dvd.

This is just a variant on the hotel question.

There is NO missing dollar. The friends paid a total of $12 -- the store kept $10, the employee took $2.
