I'm moving to Dallas in about 2 months for a new job. I'm working downtown but I don't mind up to a half hour commute. Where are some good areas to live? I don't know Dallas that well.

I WOULD NOT SUGGEST LIVING IN THE CITY OF DALLAS UNLESS YOU LIVE IN FAR NORTH DALLAS. The crime rate in Dallas is the highest in the nation right now (that city's crime rate report card was released and reported on the news the other night and it is not getting better) and city leadership is a joke to say the least. I live in a suburb just south of Dallas. If you would like to live in the 'burbs then you can go North of Dallas down I-75 and run into Plano, Allen, and McKinney. But the commute is hard cuz that is the only major freeway in and out of that area. If you move South of Dallas, you run into Duncanville, DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Lancaster and Red Oak with many different ways of getting in and out of those areas to downtown. Or you can go West to Grand Prairie and Arlington (2 major ways in and out of downtown Dallas) or East to Garland, Mesquite, and Rockwall with two major ways in and out.

Hope that helps.

I just moved to Dallas; I went on apartmentsearch.com, rent.com and various other web sites; found places I was interested in looking at, based on proximity to job, then drove up here and rented a place the same day. The area I'm in is either Park Cities or Uptown (I have not quite figured out neighborhood boundaries). It has tons of apartments, some of the complexes are new and swanky but others aren't; my complex is very nice; I chose it because it's close to work.

I would totally avoid a long commute in Dallas if at all possible. The freeway traffic is rotten. I would find a nice complex close to where I worked.

Bleh, the crime Rate depends on where you live.

Uptown is a nice area, it sits just north of downtown, and is a very urbanized district.

Highland Park & University Park are very nice areas as well, but are quite expensive.

I would not recommend living in Deep Ellum, The Village, or south of Interstate 30, or East of 75 until you get north of Knox. If you go east of downtown, make sure you move to Lakewood around the White Rock area. Between Lakewood and downtown is not nice.

A half hour commute you will still be in Dallas. I suggest anywhere north of Dallas is good or west of Dallas. Don't go south or east.
