They used to be THE team years ago. Heck, they even beat my San Diego Chargers in the Super Bowl. Now they're reduced to nothing and my Chargers are going to get revenge (again) this Sunday.

What happened to this once-talented team with all those SB championships?

Joe Montanta, Steve Young, and Jerry Rice all got old.

Football, more then any sport, is relegated to everyone being mediocre or worse at some point due to the hard salary cap structure.

Yes, the Pats were able to stay on top for 3 out of 4 seasons, but overall, a team can not stock pile talent any more and when the younger, cheaper talent wins and therefore is considered better, they can get more money on the open market. Even if T.O. wasnt a masochistic, self-absorbed hypocrite, it would have been tough for the 49ers to keep him as well as other young talent on that team (most notably is Julian Peterson) because once they show the talent, they want the money.

The NFL has more fluctuation between all of the teams over the course of a 10 year span then any other team. Look at the NFL back in 1996. The top 4 teams in the AFC were Denver at 13-3, New England 11-5, Pittsburgh 10-6, and Buffalo 10-6. The worst teams were the Jets at 1-15 and Baltimore at 4-12.

The NFC had Green Bay at 13-3, Carolina and SF at 12-4 and Philly & Dallas at 10-6. New Orleans and Atlanta were 3-13.

While some teams remain in mediocrity or worse, sucktitude (Lions were 5-11 that year and would be fortunate to win 5 this season), there is constant change due to the salary cap and the injuries that are completely unpredictable but can quickly make a good team bad (Pittsburgh) or make an average team look good because they haven't had key injuries (Minnesota).

Unlike the Cowboys, the 49ers do not have the overall name recognition the Cowboys have (even though the 49ers had the better stretch going back to the 80's and through most of the 90's while the 'Boys werent very good during the 80's) and therefore don't bring the names in like Dallas might.

However, I would rather be a 49ers fan now then a Lions fan (which unfortunately I am) because at least the 49ers played in (and more importantly, won) several Super Bowls.

Teams go up and down all of the time. The Chargers used to really stink up the field but now they are doing better. All NFL teams are that way. Take a look at Dallas, New England, and Buffalo.

Well, once upon a time, there was a team with Steve Young, Terrell Owens and Jerry Rice. Now, after some moving around, there is a team with a bunch of monkeys who can't win a game.

With wills, the interpretation can be complex and convoluted because the spouse or parent that designed it is not around to explain just exactly what they meant. Even if they had a legal will drafted, questions regarding intent are likely to come up before the estate is dispersed.

They're on the way back now. When DeBartalo had to turn over the team to his sister and Brother-in-law, that's when things started to go downhill

Salary cap era kicked in, and the management played too many cap games and got burned. Been rebuilding ever since.

Eddie De Bartolo got caught at too much criminal sh*t and lost the team to his worthless sister and her incompetent husband.
