i've returned to school to get my M.S. i'm only looking for part time morning hours doing stuff like stock/sales or non-cdl driving (ie: delivery). i've put in applications at retail chains (kohl's, best buy, circuit city) but haven't heard anything. i'm just wondering if having/going for a higher degree works against my being hired. i worked stock/sales in high school (a few moons ago) and it wasn't all that difficult (not to knock those who presently do it). any opinions/facts would be welcome.

no they just want you to have experience in the job you are applying for....or maybe they just don't need you, good luck either way!

Honestly, I would look for an internship in the field you are pursuing your M.S. This would look better and also give you valuable experience while you are studying part-time for your M.S. I suggest you look for a graduate/research assistant type position at your school if possible. Ask the department's faculty.

Seriously, when I graduated with B.S. most retail stores rejected me as being over qualified for stocking and sales associate jobs. So when you are pursuing an M.S. you will look even more over qualified. I definitely know what you feell though..since I worked stocking and delivery for two summers in college. They probably anticipate you will ask for a higher salary and will reject you. I would aim higher.

Since you are going to get an M.S. you should be networking. The job market is very competetive these days so network to find the "right" job for you. Also, your future employer won't be looking at your degree, he/she will be looking for experience. Brush up on your resume and go find positions . You can temp and go to night school. The temp positions will help you find something long term. Good Luck.

I would continue with the big box stores....maybe Sam's Club or Costco, they stock and prepare pick up orders early in the day.

You also might try an auto parts store that delivers to auto repair businesses. I assume that you are telling them up front that you just want part time while going to school. They should be happy to get someone with initiative. Good luck.

Have you tried a 24/7 store like Walmart? Alot of places hire by availability...if you won't work weekends and limit your hours during the day (like 9-2) your going to have a harder time finding a job.
