I think it might be birds or mice, I can hear scratching and bits of plaster falling into the cavity wall. How did they get in, no noticeable damage to the outside of the house. More importantly, how to get rid of them, reluctant to trap as decomposing vermin it not really the ambient smell I go for. Definitely no food or even crumbs they could eat anywhere in the house, I'm fanatical but, I heard they can live on paper, is that true? Has anyone else had a similar experience? I've never had anything like this before and I don't like it a bit. The house is rented, is it something the landlord needs to sort out?

Probably mice but could be anything from birds to carpenter ants. Yes, inform your landlord. Do not be put off by an exterminator as the method used does not leave dead bodies rotting in the walls. Part of the chemnical used makes the creatures crave water so they will leave the house looking for a source of water and when they drink the water, they die. Sounds pretty viscious but the damage that mice can do to your house and your belongings is horrendous. They also multiply about every three weeks and those born go on to multiply every so weeks and so on and so on. I use the old fashioned method...cats. But you are doing your landlord a favor to let him/her know that something is in the walls.

Mice don't need very big holes to get into the house. In my house we had a small hole near the foundation that the mice were getting into the house from. They will get up into the house where pipes come in. We put traps out where the mice come up into the kitchen. We have a cat so he was always stalking something under the stove. We found the mice coming up through where the electrical for the stove same up through the floor.

Obviously you shouldn't have to live with mice so it is in your right to contact the landlord and let them sort it out. One of the benefits of renting.

Sounds like vampire weasels to me. You'll never see them because they can tell when you're asleep and that's the only time they come out. They're not after crumbs. It's you they want.

It's a rat or the landlord is putting his victims there.
