I am curious as of how these big corporations come up with new ideas for their ongoing websites. I am sure they come out of a group of heads working together...

but do they have a group of idea developers?

Do they hire people for this?

Do they have a research department?

Yes both Yahoo and Google have big research team workin from US , India and other places .
The recruit from top notch institutions like Stanforf MIT etc...and have a very high Ph.D ratio amongst their employees .
There are many groups within yahoo with many sobrriquets and they work on various areas like Web Acceleration etc....

They hire ppl and pay well , these are amongst the best places to work for in modern economy .

Hope that helps

Addendum to WaterGuy... Google encourages its employees to come up with new ideas, called "20 percent time", to work on new projects either of their own design or otherwise that they are excited about.

A similar attitude exists at 3M, and that encouragement of experimentation led to Post-Its which are now indispensable in offices and many homes.
