The original "Solaris" is often referred to as the Russian version of "2001 A Space Odyssey", most likely because both deal with a space traveler having contact with some sort of unknown entity.

Like 2001, the film runs close to three hours and is slowly paced. Director Andrei Tarkovsky uses long takes to emphasize time, beauty, isolation or a sense of alien presence. If you have the patience for such things, the film ends up working as you don't so much watch it as feel it. But I can't say it's for eveybody.

It would depend on whether or not you enjoy foreign films or films with large portions of symbolism and philosophical pondering left to the audience. It is in fact a great film by one of the foremost directors of all-time in Tarkovsky (worth seeing just to become familiar with his work), although if you rent/buy the film be sure to get the Criterion Collection version (full running time w/ great restoration). Overall it is a very cerebral and difficult film and if you don't want to have to think too much about a movie then it is probably all wrong for you.

I rented it on VHS format about 10 years ago I thought it pretty confusing--took 2 or 3 viewings to get the story line.
If you are into the differences between US and foreign films you may like it better than Clooney's.
