Have you been using depo provera for the past 3 years?

If so, I HIGHLY recommend getting a new form of birth control.

Depo provera significantly lowers bone density in women, and even the manufacturers of depo do not recommend using it for more than two years.

In short, after three years, no depo-provera is nto safe for you anymore.

You might want to talk to your doctor about that.

However, about the period problem, depo is still perfectly healthy. It is also recommended that you use a pregnancy test every once in a while to make sure you're not pregnant, since there is still a chance you can get pregnant, and if you don't have your period, you can't really tell without some sort of pregnancy test.

I have heard plenty of horror stories about depo, some include permanent paralysis, liver damage, not being able to have children after the shot, etc. A friend of mine's wife will be in a wheel chair for the rest of her life due to a reaction from Depo. The only problem I had was three months of straight bleeding and then decided to get back on my pill. I would seriously recommend, period or no period....get off Depo!
Here is a link I think might help your decision.

Most people I talk to hate Depo-Provera and switch after a few months to a year. My mom (a nurse), my gynecologist, and the nurse here at my school's clinic all advised against it. It is known for stopping your period, and while that's not unhealthy (my Pills do that too) it has other adverse side effects that are undesirable.

SO the short answer is...no one's really sure...but if it's making you iffy you should probably switch to become more comfortable.

I know that I gained 50 pounds during the first year of being on it and it has given me lifetime migraines. Your body needs to shed about 4 times a year for periods. I know not having a period is great, but I would rather have periods than migraines and the weight.

I have been healthy all my life till i started taking bc pills. 6 months of horrible side effects and irregular pap smears and i was done! Before u get cancer STOP USING THAT SH**t!! getting a period is healthy- when taking a pill or a shot ur tricking ur body into thinking it is pregnant- bloating, nausea, mood swings, weight gain, headaches, heart palpatations, dizziness! All 2 avoid a 5 day bleeding, are u nuts? Get some condoms. Sorry for being so overbearing, just feel strongly bout the subject.

Doctors will tell you YES, its safe... But few women have adverse reactions to this medication (I myself included) If you take the shot for more than 1 year, Your chances of conceiving naturally are SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED for the next 10 years!!! I myself have been off the shot for 7 years, and cannot conceive now. I've been trying for 3 years. So good luck.

Yes it is. The depo shot effects everybody differently, when I got the shot I still had my period but my friends stopped getting theirs. It's all in how your body accepts the shot. Besides, the doctors usually let you know that is one of the side effects.

Please, go see a doctor. Having your period is an important body function and missing three years worth can't be good. You might be increasing your risk for other serious problems in the future by putting off getting a professional medical oppinion about why you are missing your menstral cycle any longer.

I was on that crap for 3 years also. Not only did I gain alot of weight on it but after I got off of it my doctor finally told me that it causes brittle bones. Get off of it now before it causes any more problems. Docs wont tell you everything. I asked my provider time and time again if there were any adverse side affects and she told me no. Then after I got off of it she told me that she was not allowed to tell me about it causing brittle bones.....WTF
