Hi, I've got a really bad ear infection and I'm in agony :o( the thing is I don't know if I'll be able to get into the doctors before the weekend. Can anyone recommend a really good over the counter remedy that has worked for you?

Thank you so much!

If it's an inner ear infection, antibiotics are the only thing that'll work. Recommend trying to get to the dr. Here's a link for herbal remedies, geared more towards outer ear canal infections, so may not help depending on what you have. Look under E. Also, pick up some ibuprofen, not tylenol, ibuprofen reduces fever, pain, and reduces swelling-tylenol doesn't. Could try putting heat over your ear, if that makes it worse try ice. Whichever you can tolerate better. Nurse just told me yesterday that heat will increase the circulation to the area, which will reduce the number of white blood cells to the area.

Studies say that antibiotics don't help anymore for an ear infection. I read in a magazine last night to get two cups of salt, put the salt in a clean sock and microwave until the heat is not uncomfortable and then lay on the "salt rag" this draws out the infection without having to use an antibiotic. The only over the counter medicines available are homeopathic. I have also put sweet oil in my ear for the pain.

If you have a bad ear infection, it is best to see a doctor as soon as possible. You can buy over the counter medications like ear drops for pain relief but most ear infections are treated with antibiotics. If not treated properly, serious complications may arise if not treated soon, i.e., fever, headaches, ear aches, trouble hearing, etc.

As a child growing up with sever ear problems I have done a lot of research on this topic.
- For antibiotics you can get stone root ( Collinsonia canadensis) in liquid form to drop in tea or juice. It is suppose to be better than anitbiotics. Does the same thing without the drug's side effects. Follow instructions from site.
-Warm compresses to the ear.
-Drink lots of water ( 8 -10 oz glasses daily) or more in addition to regular drinking habbits.
-Steep fresh thyme in boinling water for 3-5 minutes and add honey for decongestion if you are stuffy or have sinus pressure. Strain and drink Repeat as often as needed.
-Do not eat dairy, bread and be easy on all meat, because these are all mucus producing foods and will cause more problems with congestion.
-Do not clean the ear wax out of the ear. The wax is suppose to help prevent infections.
-Eat foods as fresh as possible for the nutrients and vitamins in them.
-Get ear drops over the counter to help with inner ear pain.
I hope this helps you and you get to feeling much better soon

I had a really bad ear infection last year after going to the waterpark at Alton Towers and went to the pharmacy at Tesco's. They wouldn't give me anything because the only ear stuff they stock are for clearing wax (lovely!!!) Had to get ear drops from the doctor which cleared it up - I apparently suffer from Swimmer's Ear which is odd considering I only swim about once a year!!!

Here is what my mom has me do and it really works. Go to the pharmacy and get Sweet oil. Put like 3-5 drops in your ear and put a heating pad on it for about 20 minutes. Then lay with your ear down on a pad, and let it drain. The key is to get your ear to pop and the fluid drain out, which is painful but once its over with you are smooth sailing.

If it's that painful you should get to a doctor right away and go on antibiotics. If left untreated an ear infection can cause you to lose your hearing.

I have not had any luck except with antibiotics. They will treat you at the hospital if you go. If you can't, try a warm compress on your ear. It is going to be too sore to treat any other way. Try some aspirin too until you can get to the doctors.
Get in as soon as you can, also to prevent further damage to your eardrum.
