I have a 2000 automatic Ford Escort ZX2 With about 50,000 miles. Every time I start out from a stop, my break light comes on and won't turn off until I a)hit second gear or b) tap on my breaks.

If you could tell me what this could be and how much it might cost to fix, that would be awesome. I'm a poor college student, so i can't really pay a mechanic 100 bucks just to check it out.

Check your fluid level. It might be as simple as that.

You have disc brakes on the front. As they wear the pistons that operate them move further and further out. The fluid in the reservoir on top of the master cylinder threfore will go down as the front brakes wear down.

The brake reservoir has a level sensor to tell you when your brake fluid is low. I think when you accelerate, the fluid "sloshes around" and the light comes on. If the reservoir fluid level went down more, the light would be on all the time.

So check your brake fluid! If it is low, I'll bet at 50,000 miles you are about due for your first set of front brakes.

BUT WATCH OUT!! A LOT OF BAIT AND SWITCH B.S. GOES ON IN THE BRAKE BIZ!!! Check my article http://econofix.com/linbrak.html

I would say that it could be a couple of different things such as maybe wires are crossing or touching. But I would have it looked at because if your car is playing "cry wolf" with you, you really wont know when something is really wrong! Know what I mean? And also, have a man who is a little older than yourself and has the look of "I know what Im doing and I dont take no ones ****" take your car to a shop for you. There are a lot of them that will rip you off because you are a younger female and they know that we usually dont know too much about the mechanical fixtures of a vehicle. Dont get ripped off!

check your brake fluid level, its in a plastic container under the bonnet, you will see 2 lines on it ,dont let the fluid go below the bottom line .and if it needs topped up ,dont let the fluid go above the top line,i think that is all it will need .fluid costs about £2,00.per tin ,best of luck, there is a sensor operates a warning light when the fluid starts to get low,

It sounds like the electrical switch at the top of the BRAKE pedal is sticking, try a little WD-40. Of course with a FORD it could be anything.

It means you have something wrong with your brakes. I would check the brake fluid level. You might just need to add some.
