Any of the older models are pretty bullet proof - used as taxis in many parts of the world (190D, 300D, 240D, 300D 2,5Turbodiesel, etc.) Basically anything before 1998 for the E class, then the cars started to lose that legendary Mercedes quality.

Best Mercedes Diesel Engine

I own 4 MB diesels. 3 1987 300TD Wagons and a 1967 200D sedan. The 300s get between 28 and 38 mpg. The 200D gets 35 to 44 mpg.

The best of the best is the new BluTec 350CDI They are rated at 36 and 48 mpg but are not yet available in the States.

For the best combination of Diesel and Luxury it would be the 1992 350 SDL.

I beleive that the E320 Cdi is the best diesel engine, Mercedes tested 3 E320 Cdi which every one did 160000Km in a month in a track in the US.
They are the most reliable diesel cars in the market.

I have a 1990 Mercedes 300se W126 gas. The six cylinder gets 25mpg with incredible reliability. In my opinion, it has the right combination of fuel economy and Mercedes vault like build quality. I drove a number of diesel prior to the selection of the 300se...you really will not be disappointed with the six cylinder gas. Good luck!

Car, van or lorry?

They are all reliable, but if buying second hand, ensure you have full maintenance details.

Older engines tend to be less complicated, and easier to maintain, but buying new, they are all controlled by computer technology.

My advice would be to ensure you get all the information with regard to the vehicle, and ensure you have professional back up if anything goes wrong. The millage the engine has done should not be a problem, but always check other items on second hand vehicles, such as gearbox or turbos.

PS, I paid a fortune for a brand new van, and it broke down after only 31 miles! It was a computer fault.

On an Aussie site, a report was made of Courier with a MB van (either a MB100 or MB1400D ) with diesel that had done 800,000km on most of its original parts!

The E270CDi or E320CDi are both excellent cars. I took a 270 from Calais down to Southern Spain and averaged over 80mph and 30 miles to the gallon....amazing car that I cannot praise enough!

I agree with E320 CDi. Friend of mine works one, it has 295,000 miles on the clock. It's a 1999 car, he has no problems with it but he does change the oil every couple of months, I'm convinced that that's the secret to long engine life.
