I don't see the fun of watching people inflict cruelty on one another.

Its the thrill of of the "who done it" or the "who's gonna die next" mentality. I don't think anyone watches these movies hoping that it would happen in real life. I think that most people are thrilled by what other people can come up with in their twisted minds.

I think that horror/scary/suspense/action movies satisfy a deep need to be able to explain away our fears. We can sit down and watch them, but we know that they are fake and that no one is really dying.

Look at the world around us. The movies reflect what the human race is actually capable of doing to each other. People have and will actually do this stuff to other people. I've seen the cases and the pictures. Would I rather have images from a movie or real life in my head at bed time?? Duh!! The movies will win every time, because there's part of me that still wants to believe that people are basically good and nice.

They give us an outlet to get the desire for violence and mayhem out of our system, to be able to live vicariously through the actors, and not end up in jail.

For all others, they watch them for the adrenaline rush that comes from being scared. That's still a pretty big high, and relatively cheap to get. :)

I have no idea if that actually answers your question, but there you go.

I admit I'm lured in by movies such as saw, hostel, texas chainsaw massacre, etc...it has nothing to do with the gore, blood splatting...it's the fact that this stuff could happen theoretically and in some cases it has...Texas chainsaw massacre was based on a guy who didn't hack people up with a chainsaw, but dug up women's graves and made clothing from their skin, soup bowls form skulls..etc...the reality this stuff does happen to an extent and why it ultimately attracts people i don't know...i guess it's the shock and "i can't believe" factor...kinda like watching planes fly into buildings

I love horror movies!!! I like them either for the total sickness and gore (ie, Saw, Hostel) and I am not a violent person but I just enjoy watching that. I also love a lot of horror movies for the cheese factor and the almost comedic way people get killed and the bad acting. They are comedies with blood. I like movies like Saw because it makes you wonder about how far you would be able to go to save your own life.

Saw isn't really a horror movie is it? It's more of a "gore film". A horror film makes the viewer scared but films like Saw and The Hills Have Eyes to a degree gain viewers from the amount of gore and blood and violence they show. This is what makes these films up.

A horror film is something like The Exorcist, The Ring, The Grudge, etc.

I find them suspenseful but no horror movie actually scares me, I always end up laughing the whole way through with most of them ^_^

It involves situation that don't happen in real life. Its an escape from reality. But I do see your point because I did'nt see the movie hostile because it was too over the top. Everyone has their limits. But no one said that you have to like horror movies.

I dont consider these movies (saw 1 and 2, hostel, texas chainsaw massacre (new) etc etc etc. to be horror movies.) maybe texas chainsaw massacre, but in my opinion a horror movie has a supernatural villain (alien, halloween, friday the 13th, nightmare on elm street.) those guys never freaking died. but in saw they are fighting some like 90 year old guy with cancer who thinks he can punish people. its not some supernatural entity chasing them, they are just put into situations where they have to hurt themselves, and thats not scary. its just shocking and a lot f people like that for some reason. i think horror movies are ones that make you jump and give you nightmares, as opposed to scary movies that make you jump or flinch.

I guess you don't read newspapers or watch the news either. At least horror movies are *fake*. The news isn't.
