Go to http://www.volition.com/mystery.html and there's a huge list of REAL mystery shopping companies. The rule of thumb I've found is NEVER pay a company to be a mystery shopper. The ones that ask for money are either scams or just aren't worth the money you'd pay them...

below are some of my favorite companies' links. ... Good luck

My husband was going to do something like this. He was told that once a month or so he would be sent to a place to be a mystery shopper. He would pay for a service (meal, shirt, etc) and rate what happened. He would get reimbursed for the service and paid for the amount of time it took. Basically, he "might" make about $50 once a month if he was lucky (that includes the reimbursement). He didn't have to pay anything up front though. That sounds a little weird- you have to pay for a job?

Your are right. Any "opportunity" for you where you have to pay up front is aways a scam. Keep your money.

Most major stores do employ mystery shoppers but they are either an employee of the company or employees of a service firm that provide shoppers for a fee. After all they want specific information for scientific study and analysis so they employ professionals that know just how to extract and report the infor needed.

I'd be dubious of a company you had to pay to join.

Although the mystery shopper scheme exists, they're usually done through a limited number of companies. You may want to find someone who works in a shop (It'll have to be a big one) (I know Staples UK use Gap-Buster) and find out who they use.

My roommate used to participate. The group she worked with never asked for any kind of "fee" to join. They would tell her of a restaurant or shop that they wanted to review and she'd go, she usually would have to measure specific services, like time between ordering and food arrival or if the wait staff remembered to offer their promotional item. Sometimes she'd have to order specific food items and review them.
But she always was reimbursed as well as paid a fee on top of the reimbursement.
The shopping one was a little hinky but after a while it got better.

I don't remember what groups she worked with, but it was fun when she would invite me to join her! Two sets of eyes and ears made it more fun.
