I understand they add palladium to gold to get white gold. This can be 18ct. Why is it white? Also they must add something to gold to make it 9ct. Why isn't that white??

Pure gold has been refined and is considered to be 99.999% pure. This gold is 24 kt. the lower the number the less gold. Palladium is one of the platinum family members. Platinum is a lot harder than gold. White gold has alloys added which make it white. Gold almost always has alloys added to make it more durable.14 and 10kt gold is used for rings which receive more wear. The color of gold can be changed by the different alloys nickel,silver platinum and even copper are commonly used as alloys to change durability and color of gold.Gold found its natural state Is found in various purities or kt's . The east coast of the US has the purest gold in the US it is commonly found at 22kt. The west coasts gold is less pure ranging from 18kt to 10kt found in Alaska. Many different things are added to gold to make an alloy they call white gold.
However nothing can be added to make the colour you think of as white gold that is a plating of rhodium. This isn't cheating because rhodium is a precious metal more valuable than gold.
Pure gold is a bright yellow colour, it is alloyed with other metals, typically silver copper and zinc but sometimes other additives like silicon to give special properties. These can give a spectrum of colours, from bright red through white, black brown and even green. The only way to get the bright yellow colour is to use more gold or plate the final product with fine gold.

different countries use different metals such as italy are copper-nickel fans and the uk use lots of the time copper ie rose gold
