A good pitcher, yes. Outstanding, no. His lifetime MLB pitching stats show he was little more than a .500 hurler. But he did spend a good many years in the majors. If you stick in the "BIGS" it's a sign that you are GOOD.

While his ERA (Earned Run Average) was unspectacular (4.57), he had 10 more wins then losses (82-72) and I would consider that better then average.

His best season was in 2001 with the Oakland A's in which he was 13-6 with a 3.59 ERA in his first full season as a starter.

More importantly, and this is all third party information, is that he was a good man. He was married with a 6 year old son and was just a "typical" guy that enjoyed playing Texas Hold 'Em and shooting pool outside of his (unfortunately fatal) love of flying.

While his life ended tragically, hopefully more athletes will take to heart the incident here as well as what has happened to Ben Roethlisberger, Jay Williams, Kellen Winslow JR, Bobby Phills, etc. that while they are great athletes, they are not invincible.

Forgive me if I repeat some of what Peter Gammons was saying, but he was average. He was a #4 or #5 starter in the Majors. To me, that is above average because he was one of the few that had the ability to start in the Major Leagues. One interesting thing about him is that he was noticed while being a replacement player during the stike in the 90s.

He was good, not great and probably would not have been an ace. Maybe a #2 or 3 starter. He did well his first couple yankee starts. On a scale of 1-10 he was probably a 7 or 7.5
