It's where plate-techtonic motion results in the strata of the Earth's crust being pushed together and forced skyward.
You'll notice that a mountain range in America is much like a mountain range in any other country. Namely, steep, couple of goats here and there and some crazy guys on skis.

America as in the continent of North America? Or the continent of South America?
Look it up in an Atlas or Encyclopedia. There's a ton of mountain ranges on both continents.
