Mine does the same. I took it back to the shop and the tech reprogrammed it, but a day later the same trouble recurred. Comp works fine..is this some sort of scam or virus ?

Every time you log onto Microsoft's update site your license key will be checked, if it is found to be invalid all updates will be stopped. On the side of your PC case you should have a sticker with a 25 character license code. example
THY223-DF77H-HHJ77X-GGTDE-TTRE6
This not a REAL KEY! Just demonstrating the format.
If you haven't it is more then likely that you have an Illegal copy. Your only option is to purchase a legal copy.
This site will give you a tool to view installed licences

Talk to a local PC shop about your options

That is because it is a counterfeit copy. Buy a genuine copy or take it back to the person who sold it to you and demand one. You miss a whole lot by having that pirated copy.

when it says that, then it means that maybe u didnt buy the original software from a microsoft vendor,i.e u might have installed the software from a friends cd or so,and probably u didnt register it with microsft,so u have to go to microsoft software upgrade to see what u can do about that.,

What of it? If you need a genuine version to download updates/software, you'll just have to go and buy one.
