How do they manage to look so young?

Have you noticed how they all manage to convince viewers that they are the most gorgeous, confused adoloscents who have a hard time juggling school and relationships? Are American teenagers as competitive as portrayed on TV?

I spend alot of time working with young adults. I substitute as a math and history teacher. The actors and actresses that are seen on TV always seem older to me. I don't buy it, but alot of the storylines are right in place with my kids lives. I am a young teacher myself and alot of my kids come to me for advice. They always compare their lives to shows seen on TV. I wish they didn't watch alot of them, they all want to have lives made up of fantasy,it's not realistic. If they had actual highschool kids playing roles of highschool kids, and had real life situations our kids could learn some real life lessons. A little off subject, if our kids had to wear uniforms they could find more qualities in themselves. There are alot of bright, honest, hard working kids who aren't accepted by others becaus of how they dress,or how much income their parents have. If they all looked the same, friendships would be established for better reasons. They would grow to be better people. A better future for all.

not always. but casting agencies do have special calls for people who are 18 but look younger.
the reason for this is the laws of child labor.. which limits how many hours ppl under 17 can work.

Many movies and tv shows need 14,16 even 20 hrs a day to complete a scene so they come out better using an 18 yr old who appears younger and can work a full days shift..rather than an actor/actress who must stop work and return tomorrow
because they'de need to bring back the entire cast and crew for a 2nd day shooting at what may be overtime rates for technical people.

also, its easier to not get in trouble if there is swearing, sex or booze and parties ..on the set.

Those actors actually look their age.
Teenagers usually look underdeveloped, ungainly, and scrawny with acne thrown in.
Twentysomethings are more attractive and fully developed and we let ourselves believe they look like teenagers. Take a look at the neighborhood kids.

Usually yeah. a lot of makeup and younger looking clothing helps. No one is like teens on TV it's all scripted to have all that drama at once.
